one pair down; three to go

by earthmama101 on December 14, 2011

Thank you so much for all of your heartfelt words yesterday. I know we will find our way. It’s just wierd to be completely void of concrete thoughts for the near future. In a way that may be a really good thing…allowing plenty of room for clarity as opportunities to present themselves. I will be sure to keep everyone posted. After I wrote that post, Jason came home with some big LED Christmas lights and hung them in the front window. They made me feel better and more festive…or something like that. The kids and I also made some window stars and taped them on the window too (tutorial on window stars coming tomorrow).

On another note, yarn~ing along, here is the first pair of 100% completely finished felted slippers I shared a bit about two weeks ago. They are the only pair finished so far…so I am no longer thinking or even aiming for all four pairs to all be done by solstice. But, maybe. I have the one slipper I showed in my last post stitched together, and two more of the third pair knit up, just not stitched together yet. So, you never know. I’m just struggling on the creative side of the holidays this year…taking it one stitch at a time.

This is also what it looks like when you ask to take pictures of said slippers with (or on) the new owner of them. Yes, he can be quite silly. They are very slippery slide-y slippers. So if you make your little ones a pair, they may ask you to pull them around on the floors for a ride.

I have a few quams about these slippers…and mostly they all have to deal with my own issues on imperfections. I wish I had enough of each color to do the same pattern…the checkered pattern, but I don’t seem to think things through like that. I ran out of the yellow, and didn’t want to wait till I could buy another skien. So, I made two different patterns. I think that even thought the yarns were the same yarn, different colors, the one wound up a bit bigger than the other too, by like a 1/2 inch. I tried to felt that one longer, but it didn’t help. I would have liked them a bit smaller/more snug on his feet, and less boat-like, but they just seemed to get to a point of not getting any smaller in the washer machine. I felted them in there for a LONG time. So they are both different in color and size, which bothers the crap outta me for some reason. Functionality wise, I don’t think it matter a whole lot though…especially for a five year old!

That’s kinda the thing with handmades, they won’t always be perfect. I think they are pretty cute anyways, and by being on the bigger size, they should be able to be worn for awhile….like on next winter solstice, when all the other pairs are finished!

How sweet! He looks delighted with his new slippers. I have to get crackin' with my duffers for 4 members of my family! Especially my youngest…he reminds me everyday to finish knitting his slippers.

love the slippers! and the mismatchedness. You inspired me and I have some small feet to knit for (only casting on 10 or 12) for my toddler friends, 3 pairs down! I have been doing solids and winding a contrasting string in every 20 or 24 rows.

Even though you may have some issues with the slippers, someone looks MIGHTY happy with them!!! (And really, that's what counts!!!)
