greens for the kids and other raw ramblings

Recently I have gotten a few emails about green smoothies and what recipes my kids enjoy. When I first started a green smoothie challenge in April, I had a hard time finding a good green smoothie recipe that I liked. That’s when I just decided to bag the recipe idea and use my own taste buds for good measure. So that’s the best advice I can give, however, I will still share with you three green smoothie recipes that my kids do enjoy.

Peachy Keen

blend
2 1/2 cups packed spinach
with
3 cups water
gradually add
3 fresh peaches (minus the pits)
1 10 oz bag frozen mangoes

Pineapple Mango Tango

blend
3 cups chard (removed from rib)
with
2 cups water
gradually add
3/4 pineapple
2 bananas
1 cup frozen mango pieces

Banana Cherry

blend
3 large kale leaves (removed from the stem)
with
2 cups of water
gradually add
3 bananas
1 10 oz bag frozen cherries

Our house lately has been going through quite a shift. After my husband’s fast we both fell into a raw diet for a little over a week. A lot happened during that week for me. I found that when I got lots and lots of greens during the day in the form of smoothies and salads and various other raw concoctions, I felt energized and great, craving nothing but more raw veggies. However, once I introduced cooked food back in, well, I began craving junk…and it’s not even like I am hungry when it happens…just craving… something. And most times I do not even know what…it’s weird. This is just one of the aspects of awareness this whole raw foods endeavor has brought me.

Taking a quick peek into my fridge, I see fresh nut mylk, breakfast smoothies, green smoothies, and lots of fresh fruits, nuts, seeds, and veggies. As the inside of my fridge shifts in appearance I know that it is reflecting my own inner shift as well. It very well may be a temporary shift, or it may wax and wane as the seasons do, and that is totally fine, whatever it turns out to be. My kids also have adjusted to reaching for the raw seeds or fresh fruit as what they are looking for at snack time.

(yes, that is a 5# bucket of hemp seeds~ we buy in bulk)

(and yes, I know beer is not raw)

But this little guy got started on green smoothies early. I guess you could say it was one of his first foods. He loves them and will drink any kind any time. He gets a cup out when he hears the blender and asks for his “moo me”. The great part of it is that he eats salads and greens straight out of the bowl now, cooked or not. If that’s what green smoothies do to a kid, I say bring it on! The older kid’s had to warm up to the idea, but now they beg me for a green smoothie whenever I make one. In our culture, I have no doubt that our children’s bodies are craving this fresh goodness. Gotta eat your veggies!

(Note: As you can see, I have started moving stuff around on my blog. Just doing a bit of fall cleaning inside and out. I am not completely sure where I want everything yet, so bear with me while I take the time to shift even this aspect of me around.)
