another harvest

I was so excited to peek out the window the other day and see spots of red dotting our raspberry bushes. Since we pruned back all of the canes that produced for our summer harvest, now we get another harvest. It is times like these, the successful ones, where I am so happy that we took the time to learn something and take a step forward.

These plants will produce berries well into frost. The buds ripen first at the tips of the plants, and continue down the canes, providing protection from frost to the berries ripening farthur down.

I am anxious to see what quantity we get from this harvest. After the gallons and gallons we collected earlier this season, it is hard to imagine getting that type of yield again, but it would be exciting. That is, IF these little hands leave any for anyone else. As soon as we head outside, he heads straight for those bushes. He doesn’t quite understand that the green buds aren’t quite as tasty as the juicey berries. But my guess is he’ll figure it out soon enough.

There just isn’t much better than walking out your door on a crisp fall day for a sweet treat. What a tasty reminder of summer, who in my opinion, went by way too fast this year. Did anyone else feel that way?
