out with the old; in with the new

Recently we got a tip from a berry grower in regards to pruning our ever bearing raspberry bushes. The guy we spoke with told us that when our harvest is over, to trim the canes that produced in early summer to ground level. As a result, we would have another, and larger, harvest in the fall which would last till frost. This is hard for me to imagine, however, as a novice berry grower, this year has been about a lot of learning for us. I have really enjoyed what our raspberries have taught us, and while I was out there the other day pruning them, I had a lot of insight come to me about things much bigger.

I thought about how the canes had provided us with so much life and nourishment. Then, just as their appearance showed up, it quickly left us, leaving the canes brown and used up. My job now was to take the parts that no longer will serve the plant and trim them away. However, the whole time I was trimming I kept second guessing what I was doing.

I find that when I just look at whatever I am doing and whatever is right in front of me, I can glean a bit of knowledge from just that. I can learn from these raspberry bushes and the process of trimming back things and ways that used to serve me, or at least led me to believe that they did. Quite possibly some things were very useful to me at one point in my life, but since then I have gained what I needed and now am ready to prune off those parts to provide room for new growth and opportunities to arise. It is the pruning process, and the act of letting go, that allows us the room to flourish to our highest potential.

Letting go can be such a tough step to take. Especially when it involves anything in the mothering department that directly involves something with one of my children. As a mother, I truly believe, each and every one of us want the very best for our children. By letting go, we invite endless possiblities through the door and we are given the choice to see all of the wonderful offerings the world has waiting for us.

This week at threading light we are talking about pushing furthur toward that leap of faith. Finding the trust within ourselves, as well as, in the world as a whole, can be one of the greatest gifts we can provide to ourselves and our children. Hop on over and take a peek.
