Yesterday was Jason’s birthday. Over the past couple of years we have become quite the birthday pie family. This year’s request was a blueberry dream pie.
The kids and I jumped in the car yesterday morning to fetch some fresh blueberries from a local orchard. We were just going to run in and pick some up, BUT when I saw the picking fields across the street, well, we wound up picking oursleves.
And eating a bunch too, of course!
This little guy got tired out after scavengering for berries, and waiting patiently for a nap, but it was so worth it. The weather was nice and cool and breezy, and I figured we had better enjoy the break in heat while we can.
On our way out, Kayla spotted this cute little nest in one of the bushes carefully cradling three little blueberries.
Once we got home, we got right to work.
and we carefully cut out small pieces of pie dough with small cookie cutter shapes.
The outcome was the coolest pie I think I have made yet. Do you see the four little monkeys dancing in the center of the pie? It was really fun to create the top layer of the pie this way.
It was super cool to think about how we worked from start to finish to make this special birthday pie for our Daddy. We picked the berries ourselves only mere hours before gobbling the pie up. As my children and I worked side by side gathering these perfect round fruits, it made me long to have some blueberry bushes of our own.
