This weekend was a lazy weekend. Jason went on a fishing trip with friends on Saturday and the kids and I did a lot of laid back nothingness. I feel that it is in this nothingness that I usually feel more at peace and present than any other time.
At one point during this weekend I looked out the window and noticed that Hawthorn was harvesting seeds. Seed saving is definitely one of those things that can bring about a natural rhythm and movement that keeps you centered in the present moment.
As I sat and watched as these seeds poured out of the little pod I really began to contemplate their deep significance. While this activity, along with the mindfulness of planting the seeds in springtime, calls us to the present, the seeds hold so much more than that. They hold generations upon generations of farmers efforts and knowledge and mindfulness from the past. Without the past there would be no seed today. And while we are carrying through with the intentions of growing, caring, and continuing on with the seeds that are produced from our individual harvests, we are preparing for many more future generations to come. All in all it comes together, encompassing both the past and the future, right here in the present.
Seeds are an amazing gift for sure. We were lucky enough to recieve these dried out seed pods from Elizabeth and Jude when they stopped by for a visit during our week at the cabin.
Adding that extra special intention of friendship into seed sharing takes seed saving to a whole other level. How special it is that Hawthorn gets to harvest seeds from pods that his friend gave him from his garden, that next year we will be able to plant in our garden. Growing not only some food for nourishment, but friendship as well.
Hop over to threading light for some more thoughts on the past, the present, and the future. And as always, enjoy your Monday!
